Heavy rain pours over the Angel of Independence (El Ángel de la Independencia) or Independence Column which is a monument to commemorate Mexico’s War of Independence centennial. The first stone was placed on January 2th, 1902 by the president Porfirio Díaz. The inside of the base holds the remains of some of the most important Mexican independence leaders like Miguel Hidalgo, Vicente Guerrero, Ignacio Allende, José María Morelos, Nicolás Bravo y Guadalupe Victoria.
The corners of the base are adorned by four statues representing Peace, Law, Justice and War, although there is a statue of a lion led by a child representing the dominion of the truth and intelligence over the force.
Its column is 35 meters high, composed by 2400 quarry stones and crowned by the “Angel”; a winged victory symbol among the Greeks. Mexico City, Mexico. |
