A sculpture of a breaching whale stands at La Paz levee, Baja California Sur. Pacific ocean gray whales were close to extinction because of hunting practices during the first half of the past century. Thanks to the efforts of the Mexican Government and other non-profit organizations, since 1947, the whale population has grown from less than 1000 to more than 20,000. Mexican territorial seas have since been declared whale sanctuaries as well.
