An eastern brown pelican stands on the remains of a dock at Holbox Island, Quintana Roo, Mexico. At least 8 different species of pelicans exist in the world and other 10 fossil species than have been found from over 40 million years ago.
During the middle ages in Europe the pelican became a symbol of the Passion of Jesus due to the belief of pelicans feeding its own blood to its young when no other food was available.
