| Gray whales feed during the summer months in cold Arctic waters where strong currents move nutrients, creating a rich environment for life. Whales dive to the bottom and roll to remove sediment and to trap small crustaceans, plankton and mollusks. Sediments and water are then filtered through the baleen plates (made of fingernail-like keratin) where food gets trapped and is swallowed. |
