| Gray whales, like all baleen whales, breathe through two blow holes on the top of the head which remain closed while underwater. A gray whale blow rises 3 to 4 meters (10-13 feet) above the surface. During migration, gray whales have a predictable breathing pattern with 3 to 5 blows in 15 to 30 second intervals before diving in, while at rest they blow 2 to 3 times per minute. |
